South Preschool

The teachers at South Hillsborough Preschool feel children of all abilities, from young preschoolers through pre- kindergarten are welcome to play, explore, and expand their repertoire of skills. Together, children, family members, and teachers create an environment that fosters all aspects of development to enhance the opportunities for learning. Play provides the stepping-stones children need to master new skills and expand their horizons. Developing partnerships between the families and community at the preschool will open new ways to increase, expand, and enhance the potential of each child.

South Preschool offers a 3-day Preschool, a 5-day Preschool and Pre-K program fostering social development, creativity, emotional and physical well-being in an environment designed to give your child a positive self-image. All our activities follow an overall monthly theme designed to provide your child with a rich and varied school year. We believe our students learn through play, and through play children start to develop the base of their social, emotional, and problem solving skills. Even though we are a play based preschool program, we believe academics are also important. Here at South we believe exposing children to math concepts, numbers, letters, and phonemic awareness through play is the best way they learn.

Preschool is offered three mornings a week (Monday, Wednesday, & Friday) or five mornings a week from 8:30-11:00. In the Preschool program, the children participate in a full complement of developmentally appropriate activities including arts and crafts, manipulatives, dramatic play, songs, stories, fingerplays, and large motor activities both indoors and out. We also introduce basic scientific, sensory, and physical concepts, the beginnings of Spanish as a second language, and an introduction to vocal and instrumental music of different cultures.

Pre-K is offered in the afternoon five days a week, (our time is To Be Determined). The Pre-Kindergarten program is a natural progression of learning for children who are in their final year of preschool. Pre-Kindergarten readiness skills are emphasized as well as a broad appreciation of nature, science, art, cooking, and continuation of the exploration of music and Spanish. All activities are conducted in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere that allows learning to take place at the child's own pace. In addition, our teachers work closely with the kindergarten teachers to ensure that our program provides a solid foundation for the transition into any elementary school.

A happy self-confident child is what we strive for here at South Preschool, and the only way we can achieve this, is by the parents and teachers working together. A child’s first school experience is the base for all the years to come.
